i have a really old version of ubuntu and am in need of and upgrade to the newest version. please give me a link to a direct download, thanks. so when i download this all i have to do is open it?

After you download the ISO file from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download you need to burn the ISO file to disc. if you don’t have a burner, do one of the following: 1. you can use K3b to run it on your old Ubuntu to burn the ISO to disc. http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/k3b 2. If you got Windows around, you can use Free ISO Burner, download from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/Free-ISO-Burner.shtml here is an installation guide for the Ubuntu: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation and see Release notes here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes I recommend you do a backup of your files before you attempt any type of installation. Edit: Just added a Linux CD/DVD burner to run it on your Ubuntu in case you don’t have any Windows OS around.
