Most people think of Outlook as an email program and contact manager, but the program has a number of functions that can help you manage content as well. Subscribing to RSS feeds in Outlook 2007 is a simple way to manage and receive content from a site’s RSS feed.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is an automated way of notifying subscribers that the data on a particular Web site or page has changed. This enables users to monitor their favorite Web sites without having to visit the site frequently to look for new content. RSS feeds are XML (extensible markup language) files, so you can’t read them directly. To decipher the content, you’ll need an RSS reader. Outlook 2007 has a built in feed reader.

There are two different ways to subscribe to an RSS feed using Outlook 2007. From the left side menu, open the Feeds folder. Outlook will provide you with a number of feeds. Select the ones you want and click Yes to confirm your subscription.

An easier way to subscribe is to click the RSS feed logo of a Web site you want to subscribe to. An XML or RSS logo is usually found in a site’s location bar or somewhere on the site, if an RSS feed is present. Copy the address of the feed from your browser.

From Outlook, choose Tools > Account Settings and select the RSS Feeds tab. Click New to open the dialogue box. Paste the address of the feed you copied from the site and click Add.

Outlook will display the RSS Feed Options dialogue box. Make any changes you like and click OK when you are finished. Outlook will add the RSS feed as a subfolder under the folder. You can then browse through the contents of the feed. Each time the feed is updated by the publisher, you’ll receive the new notifications in this area.
